Wall colour: Sky Blue
I wanted the bedroom to bathe in a lovely soft blue colour that would make the room feel cosy and warm. The room has large windows that reflect natural light. But, as it is a period property, the light seems somewhat softer and more diffused, and so the former stark white walls diminished the cosy ambience of the bedroom. The white colour showed up every imperfection on the old walls creating harsh reflections and glare and the beautiful cornicing did not stand out.

There are many blue hues to choose from, such as Sky Blue, Hague Blue, Green Blue, Grey Blue, Light Blue, Navy Blue, Turquoise, Teal, Cobalt Blue, Periwinkle, Cerulean, Denim Blue, Slate, just to mention a few. There are many brands that sell these colours. I would recommend selecting breathable paints. All hues have a different effect on the room whether it brings energy to a room, adds a pop of colour, a touch of sophistication or has a calming effect. I chose Sky Blue as I felt the colour brings a sense of tranquillity and an inviting cosiness. I painted the walls right up to the cornice to showcase it.
Two Focal Points in a Room
Fireplace: a focal point
The cornice is not the only period feature of the bedroom. Another feature is the original Victorian fireplace. It has a beautiful mantel that accommodates decorative objects, a cast iron hood, tiled surround and the hearth that is adorned with an antique brass pot.

The features of the fireplace add a classic charm to the bedroom, and it also adds value to the property. It’s like having a gem in the bedroom and it is an attractive focal point. So, if you have one, please keep it and restore it!
Large headboard: another focal point
There is nothing wrong with having two focal points in a room. In this bedroom, I created a large headboard with a luxurious velvet fabric. The king size bed, with the large ornate blue headboard, immediately catches the eye. It’s easy to do, if you have the right tools in hand and a space to make it - cutting the board creates an awful mess! The beautiful shape and size of the headboard along with the ikat pattern on the fabric makes the headboard striking, almost like a very stylish piece of furniture.

Furniture
Bedside Comfort: bookshelf
I placed a small bookshelf in the alcove that I painted in a darkish blue colour. It added an extra comfort to the bedroom and created a perfect spot for quiet reading. It also keeps the books away from the small beside tables and makes the tables look uncluttered and comfortable. The small vintage items displayed on top of the bookshelf created an interesting atmosphere in the bedroom.
Painted furniture
Why not have painted chests of draws in different colours? I do like mixing painted pieces that are painted with different colours like the blue bookshelf and the green and white chest of draws. The chests of draws and the bookshelf are antique pieces, and the choice of colours connects them together in the space - they do not seem to be out of place in the room. The items add a punch of colour and interest just as much as the colourful artwork on the walls.

Antique wardrobe
I did not want to place a flatpack modern wardrobe in the beautiful Victorian bedroom. Sadly, modern furniture does not last long, it’s often flimsy and it contains harmful materials. Instead, I chose a striking dark wood antique wardrobe that fits perfectly in the space. It is large enough to accommodate coats and other clothing and the doors of the wardrobe have large original bevelled mirror plates. Large sliding drawers for extra clothing are in the middle of the wardrobe.
It’s worth spending additional time to fish out items that bring elegance and practicality to your bedroom. Vintage or antique furniture can be bought in clearance houses, car boot sales, antique shops, auctions, reclaimed furniture and online shops etc.
Eclectic Accents – Rug
It is fine to place more than one rug in a room.
Layering more than one rug can create visual interest in a room, especially in a large room. The rugs can have different colours, textures, patterns, sizes and shapes so long as they share the same style and a similar style and colour palette and texture. Examples include Kilim, Persian, Berber, Boho, Tufted, Braided, Cotton, High Piled, Sisal, Hemp or Retro rugs. I chose Kilim rugs with colourful geometric patterns.
The rugs can serve multiple purposes: visual interest, dividing spaces, protecting floorboards, insulating and adding colour to a room.

The importance of a good lighting
Lighting is a very important element in interior design. Lighting sets the mood, can accentuate features or objects and create ambiance.
Bedroom lighting is just as important. I personally prefer Anglepoise bedside lamps as they can be easily repositioned adding
ample lighting for reading without being too bright.
Curtains
I opted for curtains as they offer more protection from light than blinds. Curtains are better at maintaining heat, blocking sound, and they can provide better privacy during the day and night. Full length curtains can make the room look taller and they add texture to the room. I extended the curtains with Ruskin fabric and used a beige rayon braid cord to bring an interesting element to the edge of the fabric.
Vibrant eye-catching elements
An eye-catching rug with geometric patterns brings vibrancy to the space, while the antique furniture, the headboard, the Anglepoise lamps, the colourful paintings, the displayed objects including the brass pot near the fireplace, all add to the eclectic mix. These thoughtful details create a harmonious blend of different areas and styles, making the room both inviting and unique.
To sum up
The bedroom is now bathed in a soothing light blue hue, offering a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. It’s my belief that there is a beauty in combining vintage aesthetics with modern comfort, creating a space that is both stylish and welcoming.
